Snake envenomations can be deadly for our furry friends, so it is vital that owners can recognise the signs and symptoms.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Cats Vs Dogs
CATS
- Paralysis in hind legs
- Weakness, collapse
- Vomiting
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing - progressing to respiratory distress
- Blood in urine
- Inability to blink or prolapsed 3rd eyelids
- Dilated pupils
- Comatose
DOGS
- Collapse followed by apparent recovery
- Lethargy
- Muscle tremors/shaking
- Reduced eye blinking and dilated pupils
- Sudden onset of weakness
- Complete paralysis
- Inability to control bladder and bowels
- Spontaneous bleeding
- discoloured/dark urine
WHAT TO DO?
- Do not panic - keep yourself and your pet calm
- Immobilise your pet as best you can
- Call the clinic immediately and give an estimated arrival time so the clinic can prepare
If you have witnessed your dog or cat being bitten by a snake, it is important to seek immediate veterinary attention – the longer your dog or cat goes without treatment, the lower the rate of survival. If you have seen your dog or cat playing with a snake, and they collapse but then gets up immediately and appears to be fine – call your nearest veterinarian.
